How do you choose the ideal team building activity?
Most team buildings that disappoint don't disappoint because of the activity itself. They disappoint because the activity didn't suit the team, the moment or the goal. So run through these four questions first and organise a team building no one will ever forget.
What's the goal?
There are roughly four reasons to organise a team building, and each one calls for a different type of activity:
Getting to know each other (new colleagues, merged teams, lots of new faces) → pick something that forces you to talk: an escape game, a city game or a cooking workshop. Activities in small, rotating groups beat large mass games.
Rewarding and celebrating (target hit, anniversary, successful project) → choose fun over a learning goal: festive team buildings, culinary formats or a staff party.
Genuinely improving collaboration (tensions, silos, a new way of working) → choose an activity with a reflection moment: team coaching, a DISC-based session, or a building or strategy challenge that makes team dynamics visible.
Connection in a hybrid team (people see each other too rarely) → choose something that makes coming into the office worth it, or an online or hybrid format if not everyone can make it.
How big is the group?
This filters more brutally than anything else. A cooking workshop is fantastic with 12 people and a logistical nightmare with 150. A games programme only really comes alive from 20 people up.
2 to 15 people: team building for a small group, workshops, escape rooms, tastings.
15 to 50 people: the sweet spot. Almost anything is possible.
50 to 100+ people: team building for large groups, carousels where teams rotate between several activities, or a bespoke company event.
How much time do you have?
30 to 60 minutes: an energizer or icebreaker during a meeting or study day. Think a laughter workshop, percussion fun or the Trombone Orchestra. See also the short team building tasks of up to 2 hours.
Half a day (2 to 3 hours): the most booked format. Almost every idea in this article exists in a half-day version.
Full day (5 to 7 hours): combine two activities with a lunch, or pick a full-day concept such as Expedition Robinson or Eco team building.
Multi-day: a team building with an overnight stay, from boutique hotel to glamping.
What's the budget per person?
Reckon realistically with three brackets, excluding catering and transport:
Budget p.p. and what you get for it:
€10 – €25 Unguided or app-driven formats, city games, quizzes, SUP.
€25 – €50 The bulk of the range: guided workshops, escape games, sporty activities, city games with materials and guidance.
€50 – €100+ Full-day formats, several activities back to back, exclusive workshops, team coaching, activities with lots of materials or specialised instructors.
